This is the location-based Scope 2 emission of purchased electricity in Turkey. It is not a full corporate footprint, a product carbon footprint or a CBAM declaration.
Method
Emissions (t) = Consumption (kWh) ÷ 1,000 × Emission factor (t/MWh)
If you enter one month, the annual figure is that month × 12. If you enter output, the period's emissions are divided by the period's output and shown in kg per unit. This is the location-based method of the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance: electricity consumed times the grid average emission factor.
Example: a factory on the distribution grid uses 1,200,000 kWh a year. With the 2023 factor (0.469 t CO₂e/MWh), annual emissions are 1,200 × 0.469 = 562.8 t CO₂e, a monthly average of 46.9 t CO₂e. If it makes 2,400 t of product that year, that is 234.5 kg CO₂e per tonne. In the approximate split with the generation factor (0.434), 520.8 t CO₂e is Scope 2 and 42.0 t CO₂e is the share of grid losses (Scope 3, Category 3).
Emission factors (t/MWh)
The values are exactly those on the Ministry's yearly information forms (CO₂ / CO₂e). The Ministry uses the IEA Emissions Factors 2021 methodology.
| Year | Electricity generation | Consumption point, transmission-connected | Consumption point, distribution-connected | Published |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 0.430 / 0.434 | 0.433 / 0.436 | 0.465 / 0.469 | 26.12.2025 |
| 2022 | 0.438 / 0.442 | 0.442 / 0.445 | 0.474 / 0.478 | 06.12.2024 |
| 2021 | 0.434 / 0.439 | 0.440 / 0.445 | 0.475 / 0.479 | 18.03.2024 |
| 2020 | 0.417 / 0.420 | 0.424 / 0.427 | 0.459 / 0.462 | 18.03.2024 |
Most factories are connected to a distribution company's medium or low voltage network, so the distribution factor is the default. Large sites connected directly to the transmission grid (154 kV and above) use the transmission factor. The Ministry's TUESEF grid factors are for calculating the emission reductions of renewable energy projects; they are not used for a consumer's electricity emissions.
Scope 2, Scope 3 and CBAM
Consumption-point factors include transmission and distribution losses. If you report under the GHG Protocol, the generation emissions of the electricity you consume go in Scope 2 and the loss share goes in Scope 3, Category 3. The split in the calculator uses the same year's generation factor and is an approximation. The market-based method (YEK-G certificates, supplier-specific factors) is not calculated; if you have that factor, enter it under "My own value".
This is not a full corporate footprint, a product carbon footprint or a CBAM declaration. The CBAM rules for embedded emissions per product are covered in the Proxus CBAM compliance guide.

Measuring instead of estimating
The bill gives the total for the site. To see how much electricity, and so how much carbon, each line, machine or product carries, you need continuous data from meters and analyzers. See energy monitoring and machine data collection. All tools are on the tools page.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
How do you calculate the carbon footprint of electricity?
Convert the electricity used to MWh (kWh ÷ 1,000) and multiply by an emission factor in t CO₂e/MWh. For example, 1,200,000 kWh a year is 1,200 MWh; with Turkey's 2023 distribution-grid factor of 0.469 that is 1,200 × 0.469 = 562.8 t CO₂e a year. This is the location-based Scope 2 emission of purchased electricity.
Which emission factor applies in Turkey?
The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources publishes yearly emission factors for electricity generation and for consumption points. The Ministry says the consumption-point factors can be used for electricity-related carbon footprints. For 2023 they are 0.469 t CO₂e/MWh for sites on the distribution grid (MV/LV) and 0.436 t CO₂e/MWh for sites on the transmission grid. Pick the year closest to the year you report.
What is the difference between the consumption-point and generation factors?
The generation factor covers only the emissions of electricity generated in power plants (2023: 0.434 t CO₂e/MWh). The consumption-point factor also assigns transmission and distribution losses to the consumer, so it is higher. If you report under the GHG Protocol, the loss share belongs in Scope 3 Category 3, not Scope 2. The calculator shows that split separately, as an approximation.
Is this enough for a CBAM declaration?
No. CBAM asks for embedded emissions per product under its own rules and methods; electricity is only one input to that. This calculator gives a first estimate and does not replace a CBAM declaration or a verified greenhouse gas inventory.
What if I buy renewable energy certificates (YEK-G)?
Contractual instruments such as YEK-G certificates are accounted for with the market-based method. This calculator uses the location-based method. The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance asks companies operating in markets with such instruments to report both results. For a market-based figure, enter your supplier's or certificate's factor under "My own value".
