Omron PLC data collection: CJ, CS and NJ/NX series
We read the memory areas of your Omron PLCs over FINS or CIP and connect machine data to your production systems.

Omron PLC data collection means reading memory areas such as DM, CIO, W and H on CJ, CS and NJ/NX controllers over Ethernet with the FINS protocol. On the NJ/NX series, variables can also be read over CIP.
Omron controllers are common on food, packaging and pharmaceutical lines. VOLSOFT does not program them: we agree the areas to read with the automation team, set up reading on Proxus and connect the data to OEE, downtime and process monitoring.
In FINS every device has a node number, and the PLC's Ethernet unit settings decide whether reading will work. We check those settings during the survey and, if a change is needed, hand it to the plant's automation team in writing.
What we deliver
Omron PLC data collection
-
Reading over FINS
We read CJ, CS and NJ/NX controllers over FINS, default port 9600. Each point is defined by memory area and address.
-
CIP on NJ/NX
On the NJ/NX series, variables can be reached over EtherNet/IP with CIP on port 44818. We pick the route based on how the controller is configured.
-
Host Link
For older serial models, Host Link and Host Link C Mode run over TCP through a serial device server.
-
Data types and byte order
WORD, DWORD, INT, REAL and BCD values are decoded correctly. The word order of 32-bit values is stated explicitly in the tag list.
-
Program untouched
Reading adds no code to the PLC program. By default we only read; any write is scoped and approved separately.
How a project runs
From discovery to live, step by step
- 01
Controller and network survey
We record PLC models, Ethernet units, IP addresses and FINS node numbers.
- 02
Area and address list
With the automation team we find which DM and CIO addresses hold counters, states and process values.
- 03
Data model
Values are placed in a site, line and machine hierarchy in the shared data model, with units and meaning.
- 04
Commissioning
We start reading on a Proxus edge gateway, verify against the panel and connect it to reports.
Built on Proxus
Proxus's Omron driver covers FINS, CIP and Host Link and runs on the edge gateway. A device profile is built per machine model; the next machine just gets the profile and its values flow into the Unified Namespace.
Proxus is the industrial data platform built by the VOLSOFT team.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
How do you read data from an Omron PLC?
Omron PLCs are read over Ethernet with the FINS protocol, using memory area addresses. On the NJ/NX series CIP is also an option. No change to the PLC program is needed.
What is Omron FINS?
FINS is Omron's protocol for exchanging commands and data between PLCs and other devices. Over Ethernet it uses port 9600 by default, and each device is identified by a node number.
Can you read older serial Omron PLCs?
Yes, with Host Link or Host Link C Mode through a serial device server that carries the line over TCP. The device server is standard hardware of the plant's choice; we do not sell devices.
Do you write to Omron PLCs?
Not by default; we only read. If a write is needed, the address, conditions and approval are designed separately.
